This is a project that’s long overdue. Mary and I have always wanted a fireplace in our bedroom. We’ve looked at real wood-burning fireplaces (they’re basically illegal here), wood burning stoves (bedrooms are really too small for a stove like this) and gas fireplaces (honestly, I don’t remember why we opted to NOT go this route).

This fall, we were at some friends’ house and they were in the process of building a case for an electric fireplace. While this isn’t an actual burning flame, it looked pretty cool and started us thinking.

So earlier in the week, this little gem showed up. I’ve done some rough sketches and now have a plan, we’ll see how it turns out when I dive in tomorrow.

The idea is a wood and metal encasement that will sit in the corner of our bedroom. Conveniently, there is an outlet in that area, so I don’t have to worry about running electric. I am planning on creating a “door” that can be opened so we can service the fireplace (hell, maybe that’ll be a great place to hide stuff – if it doesn’t get too hot) and access the electric outlet. I’ll post more as we move this along. A project like this will probably necessitate between 7 and 243 trips to Home Depot.
